First of all, programming Web Services in Java can also be "simple and efficient".
For starters, use Sun's WSDP, which is a collection of tools aimed at Web
Services developing. If you are an open source lover just like me, try Apache's SOAP and Axis. It is by no means harder or clumsier than doing Web Services
in .NET.

Yes, Web Services IS part of Microsoft's vision of the .NET framework right from
the start and yes it is easy and even fun to use. But that doesn't necessarily
mean that the .NET framework is superior. A lot of what we hear and see about
.NET these days are media hypes and/or marketing spiel . For instance, the
convenience of developing Web Services using .NET depends heavily on the
abilities of Visual Studio.NET, not the framework itself.

And you have to blame Sun for not providing everything you want. In fact,
one of the many things I love about Java is that I can choose different
APIs instead of being locked to one vendor's product line. Sure Sun doesn't
offer as much as Microsoft does, but why should it? We've got the Java
community and I always believe it is by far a better source of tools or assistance.
