What is the essence of grid computing?

In my opinion, grid computing is something that leverages the distributed resources for a given task. However, OGSA based grid technologies, represented by Globus, are too complex to be quickly mastered by a beginner. Can we have something less complicated?

I think it is critical in any distributed computing (DC) solution to conduct load balance and resource provision. In a typical load balance solution, we van follow the M (monitor), A (analysis), P (plan), E (execution), MAPE, model. The key here is the plan step -- how can we predict the performance for a given kind of application? For web application, this is addressed pretty well, while not perfect, by the MM/1 queue model. However for those non-web applications, there is no such good models be developed.

But we can use some other technologies, like the Finite Element Model (FEM) to participate the original problem and do some local optmization to partly address this question. But......

-----P.S. This is the part 1 of my own opinions for grid computing. Please let me know if you like such original ideas, or you can share your ideas...
