middleware is basically messaging layer for heterogeneous enterprise systems and applications to communicate and exchange information and business data, for example, from SAP SCM to in-house distribution centers, in between you can have a mainframe housing enterprise wide SCM pricing info, therefore a pricing punchout is required for this business process to go through.

now middleware is more known as enterprise application integration (EAI) tools, such as IBM WebSphere Business Integration, webMethods, SeeBeyond and Tibco and more....

For you to start with Java/J2EE based EAI, Wrox has a book in this area. The JMS provider you may use is OpenJMS or JBoss/JMS. Most products are either hub-and-spoke or integration bus, but point-to-point or pub/sub will be implemented for reliable messaging along with some transactionality.

You may try to google for this and I remember I posted a link for integration patterns...Sun has a tutorial for JMS and O'Reilly has a book in JMS...
