This is the first installment of a six-part article in which I'll take you through my early experiences with Rational's new Java-based integrated modeling and development environment, Rational XDE Professional v2002 — Java Platform Edition. (Click here for an evaluation copy.) As a software architect and developer who has used a number of different modeling and development tools, I find this "extended development environment" to be a valuable addition to my toolbelt.
I'll relate my own experiences using Rational XDE Professional, complete with sample code, a discussion of XDE concepts, and advanced tips and techniques for getting the most out of XDE. In the end, you should have a clear idea of what XDE can do and how it might fit into your own suite of software engineering tools. However, note that the sample code is not robust, commented, or intended for real-world use.
Each installment will begin with a roadmap through the article like the one below, with links to those parts of it that are currently available.
  Part 1: introduction to XDE, exploring key features and comparing it to other tools
  Part 2: building a first application in XDE — creating the design, modifying some code, testing the application
  Part 3: building a Web application in XDE — prototyping a simple JSP/servlet application deployed to WebLogic
  Part 4: migrating to XDE — why and how to move from an existing code base and different design tool
  Part 5: using advanced XDE modeling features, including toolbox customization, model validation, and patterns
  Part 6: using advanced XDE development features, including code templates, refactoring, and debugging capabilities
Note that there's also a .NET edition of XDE product, which is tightly integrated with Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET development tool. Wherever I refer to XDE in this article, I mean the Java edition of it
